It wasn’t the result the Canadians played for, but it also wasn’t the game a lot of people expected.
You’ve probably heard by now that the Canadians had lost seven straight games to the Americans dating back to last year’s world championship. The U.S. Shut out Canada 5-0 in their preliminary-round game, which wasn’t even close.
That’s not what we saw today from a Canadian team that played with much more desperation. As it so often does between these two teams, it came down to one goal.
That doesn’t provide much consolation for this Canadian team, including their captain, who is in tears. But they gave us a great game.
Knight heaped praise on Poulin when asked about the end of the longtime Olympic rivalry between the two team captains. She said they both can take credit for carrying the sport for a number of years at an international level.
"She's a tremendous human being, an amazing player, a generational player," said Knight, after confirming these are her last Winter Games.
"Only one person can win at the end of the day, that's sort of just sport, but I have the utmost respect for her."
Being veterans of women's hockey, Knight added that they can relate to each other despite being on rival teams.
"I think you saw that going through the handshake line. We have so many things in common," she said. "The only difference is we're on the other side."
Knight said she was actually more nervous before her proposal to American speed skater Brittany Bowe than she was before today's game.
"My legs felt like Jell-O. I was kind of carrying that for the whole tournament," she said about her nerves over her engagement.
Knight gave the Canadians credit for not letting them win the gold medal without a fight.
"We played against an incredible hockey team. It was just a matter of leaning on them slowly throughout the course of the game," the U.S. Captain said.
That wraps up the questions for Poulin and Ryan. Keller and Knight are speaking now.
About that hit on Ambrose in the third period, Ryan said it never feels good to see one of your players go down like that. But he doesn't immediately take issue with the refs' call.
"Those are tough calls to make … you gotta trust they made the right call."
Ryan said he believes the commitment level from the players "was where it needed to be" throughout the tournament.
"Their play, their mentality, put them in a position to potentially win that [gold-medal] game."
Poulin was asked about playing through the injury she sustained during Canada's preliminary-round game against Czechia last week.
"I didn't want to be a distraction. It did suck getting injured but it's no excuse," she said.
Poulin and head coach Troy Ryan are taking questions from reporters now.
The Canadian captain was asked for her reaction to the game's outcome. She repeated some of the comments she made earlier in the mixed zone.
"We knew it was going to be a battle. Obviously we came up short, but I'm truly, truly proud of this group," she said.
Asked whether this was her last Olympics, Poulin said she wasn't sure yet.
Canada's Marie-Philip Poulin after gold-medal loss to United States: 'sadly we came up short'
Megan Keller's golden goal in overtime gave the United States a 2-1 win over Canada in the Olympic women's hockey final.
Still visibly emotional after the loss in the gold-medal game, Poulin said she was proud of her team for giving the Americans a hard fight after the Canadians faced a lot of doubt going into these Games over the age of the squad.
"I'm very happy about this group. I don't think there are a lot of people that knew we were going to come out hard like that," Canada's captain said.
"People doubt, people wonder, people say we're too old. People were just talking … We came out hard. We gave them a battle."
Alysa Liu becomes 1st American to win the Olympic figure skating women's singles title in 24 years
American Alysa Liu ended a 24-year drought, by winning the Olympic figure skating women's singles title at Milano Cortina 2026.
Liu, 20, becomes the first American female singles skater to win a medal since Sasha Cohen won silver in Turin in 2006.
She had a final score of 226.79, beating Japan's Kaori Sakamoto, 25, by just under two points.
Japan's Ami Nakai, 17, won the bronze medal.
